We've just added a new screen-print to our Shop section, and it's by the multi-talented graphic designer Mark James. To coincide with the release of the print (entitled The Lobstar), we thought we'd also show a selection of James' work here...
Originally born in Cardiff, James started out designing album covers for Welsh band Super Furry Animals, including frontman Gruff Rhys's solo album Candylion. He also worked as an art director for Island Records for three years, creating distinctive designs for bands such as the Fratellis and the Charlatans. Now based in London, and inspired by a mix of popular culture and social commentary, James' work includes art direction, video direction, photography, illustration, graphic and product design.
James first came to prominence in 2004 with the release of Chinpira, a study of the British football hooligan in the form of a 6” vinyl figure, a piece which provoked condemnation from both the English Football Association and national press. James continued to court controversy in 2007 when he released Another Soldier, a screen-print series with an anti-war message produced in an edition of 171, each to commemorate the life of a British soldier killed in Iraq.
James was also responsible for the series of CardBoy figures, an answer to the dilemma of ‘what to do with the box’. CardBoy Sneakers (the second in the series of figures) paid homage to classic sneaker boxes and featured eight characters with accessories - a project we first wrote about in the Art & Sole book. The next set in the series, CardBoy Cartridges, went on to be chosen by the Museum of Modern Art in New York to accompany their Color Chart exhibition. In fact, James has had his work exhibited all around the world, including London, Paris, Tokyo, New York and Oslo, as well as featuring in various publications worldwide.
Other work shown here includes; 99% is Shit, a 7" vinyl figure released in an edition of 99; a meat collage created for Euros Child's 'Chops' album; and skulls made from compressed newspaper and packaging tape, one of which was spliced open to create a screen-print.
James originally created The Lobstar artwork for a screen-print series back in 2008, released in two separate colour versions (red and white/gum) as an edition of 50. Paying homage to three design icons, the adidas Superstar, Andy Warhol’s 1982 Lobster print and Mother Nature's own creation, The Lobstar has now been reworked in a blue colourway especially for Art & Sole.
