Nike & Freegums

Miami-based Peruvian artist Alvaro Ilizarbe, aka Freegums, recently created this detailed repeating pattern for a collaboration with the Nike LeBron 9 basketball shoe.

The theme behind the pattern is Miami x LeBron (LeBron James plays for the Miami Heat basketball team), and there are various Miami-related elements in the pattern, as well as references to James (and the subtle inclusion of Freegums' initials). Ilizarbe’s work can be seen on the lining of the shoe, as well as being printed in a white-on-white treatment on the outer areas of the sneaker. Ilizarbe's black and white artwork also features on the box, and Nike even created a very limited edition (there are rumoured to be only five) heavily laser-etched wooden box - again featuring Ilazarbe's imagery.

Additionally, Foot Locker's House of Hoops have recently produced a video (see below) documenting the collaboration, in which Freegums talks about his work, his inspirations, and his perspective on the project.

Limited to 150 pairs, the Nike LeBron 9 Freegums will be released on 31 December 2011 at select US outlets only
