Sole DXB: The Art of the Sneaker
A few weeks ago, Alex Nash gave us a sneek preview of a new project (more on that later) that he was set to unveil at the Sole DXB Sneaker Summit event in Dubai. Billed as 'the only sneaker festival in the Middle East', the event was centred around the theme of The Art of the Sneaker and featured a whole host of sneaker/art-related activities...
Created by Sole (itself a platform for urban and alternative culture within the Middle East), Sole DXB caters to the ever-growing sneaker scene in the region and is part convention, part street party. The event is now in its second year and the 2012 summit aimed to be bigger and better than its previous incarnation, with a huge roster of content including (among other things) a Nike Sportswear and Max100 exhibition; a New Era ‘Artist Series’ exhibition; sneaker-inspired art and photography exhibitions; live graffiti and performances from international and local artists, bands and DJ’s; a skate park championship; and a showcase of impressive sneaker collections from around the Middle East.
As part of the festival, Sole DXB also commissioned 10 local artists to each create a sneaker-inspired artwork (images of which can be seen below), and Nash demonstrated his working methods by taking part in a live sneaker-customisation event (look out below for a Sneaker Speaker image) as well as exhibiting some of his previous, and more familiar, custom projects.
