Vans & Mike Hill

Vans definitely seem to be on top form with their artist collaborations recently, the latest of which is this Syndicate pack by Alien Workshop co-founder and art director, Mike Hill...

Since establishing skate brand Alien Workshop in 1990, Hill has cemented the company's status as one of the most creative elements in the skateboarding industry. From advertising campaigns to full-length skate films, Workshop's art direction is always experimental and sharply executed, setting their style worlds apart from other brands.

For this Syndicate collection, Vans have put together a two shoe pack consisting of an Authentic Pro and a Sk8-Hi Boot. As with Alien Workshop's unique style, big garish gimmicks have been deemed unecessary and the Authentic Pro is clean and considered, with a mint upper and hiking style laces sitting above a standard white midsole. A graphic image of a pig is repeated across the insoles, reminiscent of the sort of animated imagery seen in Alien Workshop's last full team video, Mind Field. Also, the usual 'Off The Wall' red rubber seal on the reverse of the midsole is replaced with a stylised 'Sect' label, a reference to the Sovereign Sect (the alias for DNA Distribution which houses Alien Workshop alongside Habitat Skateboards).

The Sk8-Hi boot is a more luxurious looking shoe, with a premium dark green leather upper, white moccasin stitching around the toe box and hiking style laces and eyelets. Workshop artwork adorns the custom tongue tab and again extends inside the shoe onto the insoles, where this time there's a slightly more menacing image in comparison to the Authentic Pro.

As an additional extra, a pack of DIY rubber stamps accompany both shoes, allowing you to apply Alien Workshop artwork to anything you like (including the shoes) with an ink pad. Also shown below are images of the collaboration release party and art show, held in Vancouver. The show displayed some of Hill's most notorious skateboard decks and original artwork, including the three-dimensional artworks featured on the insoles of the shoes

The Vans & Mike Hill pack is available now via select Vans accounts such as Flatspot
