Vans & Star Wars
The months of May (cue 'May the 4th be with you' jokes) and June have seen a new and quite frankly excellent collaboration between Vans and the Star Wars film franchise - with two seperate collections featuring some striking and very unique artwork...
Vans initially released six models earlier this year (on 4 May, of course) as part of their Classics Collection - drawing inspiration from the various characters and planets of the Star Wars world. What’s great about this part of the collaboration is that not only have Vans utilised iconic film imagery, they’ve also created new graphics and patterns from the film elements... perfect for graphic pattern lovers who may not have a direct interest in the films themselves.
Representing the Dark Side is a Boba Fett camouflage Authentic model, showing the bounty hunter alongside the Death Star, Darth Vader and the odd Stormtrooper. A second Authentic comes in the form of a black and white Stormtrooper bandana print - Stormtroopers and paisley, you weren’t expecting that were you?
Don’t worry, it’s not all about the Dark Side, as balance is brought to the force in the form of an Authentic and Sk8-Hi Reissue - both of which feature a Vans archival Hawaiian pattern combined with images of Yoda. Finally, a Classic Slip-On showcases the iconic 1977 poster artwork for Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and the last model of the collection, an Era, displays comic-book style graphics inspired by vintage Star Wars memorabilia. Extending beyond the footwear, a range of apparel and accessories have also been created, including T-shirts, socks and even a Hawaiian/Yoda backpack.
The second part to this fantastic collaboration comes under Vans’ more premium label, Vault by Vans, and utilises two rare Vans prints from the 1980s while also incorporating images of Star Wars villains. The first print, Miami-themed, features silhouettes of Imperial AT-AT Walkers and has been applied to OG Sk8-Hi LX and OG Slip-On LX models. The second print, Pirate-themed, goes back to the Dark Side and utilises images of Darth Vader, Stormtrooper helmets and lightsabers to create special editions of the OG Era LX and OG Sk8-Hi LX.
With the great original film artwork and all the bespoke patterns created for this collaboration, the final (and potentially our favourite) shoes are the two much more subtle OG Half Cab LX models. An all-white Yoda colorway goes head-to-head with an all-black Darth Vader version - and we particularly like the characters themselves appearing on the Half Cab labels.
To celebrate the launch of this part of the collaboration, Vans also created the short film shown below. It features a skate contest set in the 1980s - can you guess which legendary skateboarder is wearing the Chewbacca costume?
Less than 300 pairs of each Vault by Vans model were produced for the launch in June, with the collection being sold at selected premium outlets in the US and Europe.
