To create the almost thermodynamic-like patterns on his Seely (shown top), Lyons experimented with watercolour paints and paper - picking up on processes he'd played with and used over the past few years. 'With the Seeley,' explains Lyons, 'I wanted to create bright, colourful all-over prints... but making sure the shoes are still very wearable.' In a similar concept, for his Adi-Ease shoe, Lyons referenced some of the colour paint drops created accidentally when working on his larger monster-based murals, where he regularly uses sponges and water-based paint (Lyons also created a mural for this project, shown bottom). 'I loved the idea of doing a white shoe that had the watercolour on it,' says Lyons, 'but it's not meant to look like literal paint splatters - more a fabric design that was made up of those drops and splatters.'
In contrast to Lyons' bold use of colour, Jean André explains that he wanted his Seeley to be an unusual creation that he himself would wear: 'I figured out that if you were to stand in a pool of black ink with white shoes, it could be a cool look and feel.' For his Adi-Ease, the French artist created an all-over pattern which draws similarities between leaves and womens' lips. 'I thought that everybody would expect me to draw girls on the shoes,' says André, 'but I don't really love figurative patterns. I did, however, want a thugged-out black and white pair that I'd be proud to rock, so I added the girl inside as a signature, last touch.'
Entitled All Day I Dream About Stripes, HVW8 are currently hosting an exhibition (and series of events) as the focal point for this collaboration, with the four shoes plus original work by the artists on display. This will be followed by an installation at Art Basel in Miami (running from 3-7 December) and the collaboraton will then be displayed at a selection of European galleries.
The All Day I Dream About Stripes exhibition runs from 15 November to 28 December at HVW8 in Los Angeles. The adidas & HVW8 & Kevin Lyons & Jean André sneakers will see a release sometime before the end of this year
