adidas & Shigeki Fujishiro

Following on from the recent re-launch of the classic adidas Stan Smith silhouette (see here), this collaboration between adidas Consortium and Tokyo-based product designer Shigeki Fujishiro uses the blank canvas of the Stan Smith in a very interesting way…

Although coming from the perspective of a product/furniture designer, Fujishiro’s collaboration (entitled Play), has a definite art-like aesthetic and the simplicity of the idea is what makes it so interesting. ‘I really liked the shoe without any modification,’ explains Fujishiro, ‘so I came up with the idea of threading the perforations, allowing you to bring the shoe back to its original condition if you remove the thread.’ It’s a concept that caused divided opinion at Art & Sole, but, whatever your viewpoint, it’s certainly a more interesting and unusual take on the art of the collaboration – and one that builds on the original design elements of this tennis shoe (as well as having a nice reference to the stringing of a tennis racket).

The shoe is actually part of a wider Consortium pack that sees five different designers (including Fujishiro) from the Far East making their mark on the Stan Smith. Other designers in the series so far include renowned streetwear labels Neighbourhood, Clot and Mastermind.

The adidas & Shigeki Fujishiro Stan Smith is set for a limited release on 8 March via select Consurtium accounts, including the adidas No.6 store in London
