Jon Lawrence & New Balance & SoleHeaven
Online sneaker store SoleHeaven recently commissioned Leeds-based ceramics artist Jon Lawrence to create these intricate New Balance 577 sneakers. Three pairs of the porcelain shoes were hand-crafted and glazed from authentic Cumbrian clay quarried close to NB’s Flimby factory - with two out of the three pairs going to New Balance, and the third being put up for grabs in a competition run by SoleHeaven.
The catalyst for the project came when Lawrence first worked with SoleHeaven back in 2008, casting a pair of Nike Dunks as part of their Custom Kicks Series. Set up by SoleHeaven, the Custom Kicks Series is a showcase for UK sneaker customisers, presenting an opportunity to display work as well as talking about the processes involved. ‘We inadvertently stumbled upon Jon's work at an art gallery’, explain SoleHeaven, ‘and once we'd seen what he was capable of we were straight on the phone begging him to be part of the series.’
Lawrence has also created pieces in the forms of Nike Air Max 1, Nike Cortez and Nike Air Max Classic BW. ‘Everybody knows the feeling of a brand new pair of sneakers,’ says Lawrence, ‘and I want to make this feeling permanent. The aesthetic of trainers are preserved in porcelain ready to last a lifetime.’
