K1X & The Lion Base Crew

Following a sister project from 2011, clothing brand K1X have just released this new collaboration with young African artist collective the Lion Base crew - a 20-strong group of 'street kids' from Sierra Leone...

For the project (entitled The DCAC Batik Edition and created in partnership with the *folorunsho project) the 20 young people from Freetown, Sierra Leone, created a variety of patterns using traditional Batik (a cloth that is made using a manual wax-resist dyeing process) techniques. Each of the 20 fabrics created (one by each artist involved the project) were then used to create 20 pairs of one-of-a kind K1X DCAC sneakers.

The shoes also come with a photographic documentary book (shown below), entitled Lion Base, which illustrates the creation process involved in the project as well as offering an insight into the often-grim realities of living in Freetown. A video (also shown below), adds yet further insight to the project, again showing how the fabrics were created, but also serving as an introduction to the people that created the unique materials...

The DCAC Batik Edition is available now exclusively through Paris-based boutique Colette
All profits from the project go directly to the artists, to help to provide them with an education and adequate living conditions
