A Few of My Favourite Sneakers: Owen Phillips

While we were at Pick Me Up last week, we were lucky enough to have a very quick chat with illustrator Owen Phillips while he was busy rendering a pair of sneakers for the It's Nice That live drawing event. We asked Owen if we could show his work on this blog, but he came up with an even better idea; to draw his top ten sneakers especially for Art & Sole...

As listed below (in order of appearance), the sneakers that Owen's chosen to draw for us are his ten favourites from his own personal collection:

Nike Air Footscape Woven
Nike Air Huarache
Nike Dunk High Premium (DQM)
Nike Air Magma ND
Nike Air Zoom Moire+
Nike Vandal Supreme (Geoff McFetridge)
Pointer Crago
Nike Lunar Wood+
Nike Blazer High Suede Vintage Quickstrike
Vans Authentic

We thought we should ask Owen to talk a little about his selection and what they mean to him, and this is what he said: 'The Nike Air Magma's are a new addition to my collection as the winter in London has been crazy this year. They can handle anything you want to throw at them - snow, ice, rain - and they still look fresh. I've had the Moire+ for three years now and run in them three to four times a week. They look trashed now but still hold there own - I can't recommend this sneaker enough. The Pointer Crago was the first strictly non-trainer shoe I think I've ever bought - they're super versatile and you can wear them with anything, plus they're as comfortable and light as a sneaker. I felt I had to include these as Pointer have managed to bridge the gap between sneaker and shoe perfectly. I picked up the DQM dunks in Japan, they had just dropped over there and as soon as I saw them I just had to have them - the perforated suede upper is beautiful. I've worn these to death and they just get better with age.'

When asked why he likes to draw sneakers, Owen explains: 'It's the design features that draw me to collecting sneakers and I like to be able to represent those in my drawings. I love to collect different objects that catch my eye, and then I like to document and categorise what I have - plus, as objects, sneakers have such a great silhouette and when you draw them with a slight shadow they really sit on the page.'

Lastly, we asked Owen if his top ten was in a particular order: ‘Ha, I’ve tried but it's impossible, it was hard enough picking 10 in the first place!’

Love the fact that you can see the inside of the heel is worn through to the rubber on the Vans. Very authentic. See what I did there?

These illustrations are brilliant, I love the high tops, and Huarache’s are just delicious!

Sick drawings dude! Love the line work – and wicked subject matter! Been looking for a pair of those Nike Vandal Supremes all over… Are the illustrations available to buy?
