Shin Tanaka

Our good friends over at Creative Review have recently featured a story on the ever-growing paper toy scene which has been developing across the world for the last few years. One of the artists featured in the piece is Japanese graffiti writer Shin Tanaka, and as we originally featured Tanaka's work in the Art & Sole book, we thought we'd get in touch with him to see if he'd been working on anything sneaker-related lately. The answer was a definite yes...

Inspired by this year's most talked about shoe release, Tanaka has created 15 pairs of the much-loved Nike MAG in collaboration with the Limited Edition Gallery. Individually numbered, the shoes are made completely from paper - meaning of course (as the gallery light-heartedly points out) that the LED light and auto-shoelacing features are not included.

As well as the Nike MAG, Tanaka has also produced a new paper figure called Shoe Man. The character was inspired by some favourite sneakers from Tanaka's collection, including the Nike Air Force 1, Nike Court Force and Nike Footscape silhouettes. As Tanaka explains: 'I feel sneakers are not just a shoe, but that they each have their own identity, which is why I decided to make a sneaker-based character.'

To see more of Tanaka's work, check out his website.
The Paper Nike MAGs are available now via eBay.
The December issue of Creative Review is out now and features a bound-in 170gsm blank custom toy template so you can make your own paper toy
