Vans & Chris Kong
We’re definitely partial to a bit of BMX action here at Art & Sole, so this collaboration between Vans OTW and Hong Kong-based art director/designer/artist Chris Kong certainly caught our attention with it’s blatant 80s BMX references…
Renowned for his vinyl creations (mostly in collaboration with well known contemporary artists) under his Garageworks Industries and Made by Monsters labels, OTW advocate Chris Kong’s first footwear collaboration uses the Vans Alomar silhouette and is a colourway heavily influenced by 80s skate and BMX culture. The bold red and blue color palette was inspired by board and bike graphics of the era, and the lightning-bolt embroidery is a reference to old-school BMX brands such as Kuwahara and Elina. Most obviously, the checkerboard midsole pays homage to the first checkered silhouettes from Vans.
Despite the retro styling, the shoes also have some modern-day action sports functionality, with premium suede, ballistic nylon, 3M reflective tongue and heel tabs for night riding, and lace covers for added protection while cycling.
As well as teaser for video for the collaboration (featuring good use of a vintage Skyway TA bike), also shown below is the Vans OTW Advocate: Chris Kong video featuring a more detailed look into Kong’s thoughts and inspirations.
