Vans & Stüssy & Alakazam
We’ve been a bit slow in posting this story (as we’ve been trying to get hold of decent images of the shoes themselves), but this Era silhouette is a three-way collaboration between Vans, Stüssy and graphic artist Will Sweeney…
The shoes are part of a capsule collection entitled Operation Radication, itself a collaboration between Stüssy and Sweeney’s Alakazam label; a London-based creative outlet run by Sweeney and Ayako Terashima. The label produces T-shirts, prints, exhibitions, books, comics and various other illustrated ephemera.
The main body of the collection features an assortment of clothing and accessories (T-shirts, caps, a backpack, belt and even a pair of socks) inspired by 70s science fiction, horror comic books and, most obviously, Jamaican and British reggae/dub album artwork. The Vans Era shoes (which as far as we know are only available in Japan) were actually art directed/produced by Stüssy using elements of the graphics created for the rest of the Operation Radication project – with Sweeney having no actual 'hands-on' input to the shoes themselves. The upper fabric is black denim, and other details included reggae-themed eyelets, insole, midsole and outsole, with Sweeney's Lion artwork featuring on the tongue label.
As the Operation Radication project collection mostly takes its inspiration from old-school reggae and dub album covers of the 70s, Stüssy and Sweeney also thought it appropriate to create a mix tape inspired by the collection. Radio Radication, featuring reggae and dub tracks hand selected by Sweeney, can be downloaded from the Stüssy website here.
Also shown below are images shot for the Operation Radication lookbook, photographed by Shaniqwa Jarvis in LA, plus a video which highlights pieces from the collection…
The Vans & Stüssy & Alakazam Era’s are available now via outlets such as Zozotown Japan. The rest of the Stüssy & Alakazam Operation Radication Collection is available exclusively at Stüssy Chapter Stores and Stüssy online
