Vans & The Beatles
Showcasing the unique artwork from the visionary Yellow Submarine album and film - today sees the European launch of this collaboration between Vans and The Beatles…
Based on a song by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Yellow Submarine was originally released in 1968 and is an imaginative tale of peace, love, and hope – all of which is propelled by The Beatles soundtrack. When the film was first released, it was instantly recognised as a landmark achievement due to its use of innovative animation techniques. Led by designer Heinz Edelmann and director George Dunning, a team of mostly young and unsung artists spent almost a year creating the film for a budget of less than $1m. The artists and directors used techniques and media no one had ever used before, and possibly haven't since.
Many see the film as a work of art, and it has certainly influenced many illustrators and artists working today. Without Yellow Submarine there may not have been animated classics such as The Simpsons or Sponge Bob Square Pants (both of which have purposely referenced Yellow Submarine at least once).
The collaboration with Vans uses artwork and colour schemes taken directly from the album cover (shown bottom) and the four main silhouettes used for the collection include; the Sk8-Hi Reissue, with alternating artwork featuring individual portraits of The Beatles on each quarter-panel; the Classic Slip-On, which features a take on the Sea of Monsters sequence from the film and showcases an underwater scene across each of the shoes when viewed from left to right; the Era, which features a scenic garden complete with the band; and finally the Authentic which displays an all-over All You Need is Love design. Yellow Submarine branding also marks the collection on every footbed, as well as on the woven labels of each (laced) shoe and the custom collector's box made especially for the project.
In addition to the four main shoes, there are also two children’s silhouettes scheduled for release – the Toddlers Authentic, which features the all-over All You Need is Love print, and the Toddlers Classic Slip-On, featuring Yellow Submarine imagery (both of which are shown below).
